Northwest School of the Arts Dance Audition Process

The NWSA Dance Department focuses on all classical dance techniques. Dance is offered on both the Middle School and High School levels.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Next Audition: Friday,March 17

Time: 4:30PM- 6:30PM

Audition Requests Due: March 14

Audition Length: 1 hour

Basic knowledge of dance techniques is a prerequisite for admittance into the NWSA Dance Department. Dancers should be prepared to complete movement combinations in Ballet and Modern.

Please be prepared to dance promptly at the given time. Late arrivals and students not dressed in the required attire (listed below) will be dismissed.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AUDITION PROCESS

Dance experience preferred

Audition Part One:

The student must prepare a one (1) minute movement piece set to instrumental music to be performed for the Dance Faculty. The dance should include, but is not limited to:

  • Locomotor and non-locomotor movements
  • Pathways (curved, zigzag, diagonal)
  • Shapes (high, medium, low)
  • Movements on different levels

The student may bring a smart phone, mp3 player or CD with recorded instrumental-only music. Parents are not permitted in the audition area: please make sure the phone/player is charged, and that the student knows the password to the device and how to locate their music file on the device.

Audition Part Two:

The second portion of the audition is a dance technique assessment that will include combinations in Ballet and Modern dance. This assessment will include basic skills in these dance forms. In the assessment, students will be participating in Ballet Barre exercises. In Modern Dance, they will be asked to perform movements and techniques that are stationary in the center of the floor and that travel throughout the dance space.

Audition Attire

Ladies’ Attire:

  • Black fitted active wear (i.e. Yoga pants or jazz pants)

Gentlemen’s Attire:

  • White Fitted Shirt
  • Black Fitted Jazz Pants, Athletic Shorts, or Black Tights

NOTE: Street clothes or shoes are unacceptable attire and will be grounds for dismissal from your audition. If accepted into NWSA dance, the dancer will be using the proper dance attire items 2 or 3 times a week in their dance classes.

HIGH SCHOOL (GRADES 9-12)

Dance experience required

Dancers will be asked to perform basic Ballet and Modern dance combinations and techniques such as Plié, Tendu, Dégagé, Battement, and Jeté. In the audition, they will participate in Ballet Barre exercises, Petite Allegro, and Grande Allegro combinations. In Modern Dance, they will be asked to perform movements and techniques such as Tendu, Prances, and Jetés or Leaps.

Audition Attire

Ladies’ Attire:

  • Black Leotard
  • Pink Tights (convertible or footless preferred)
  • Pink Ballet Shoes (Leather or Canvas are suggested)
    *It is not required to purchase shoes for the audition. Ballet shoes will be required if the student is accepted in the program.

Gentlemen’s Attire:

  • White Shirt
  • Black Fitted Jazz Pants or Black Tights
  • Ballet shoes are suggested. It is not required to purchase shoes for the audition. Ballet shoes will be required if the student is accepted in the program.

OPEN HOUSE:

Our Open Houses provide an opportunity to “wander” the school and to attend an information session. Members from our Arts Booster Clubs are usually present at Open Houses.

We will tour the school and have an optional Q and A session. We encourage you to bring your child. Please limit extra visitors if at all possible. Please pay attention to parking instructions when signing up for the tour. The link to the signup is below:
